Jesse Franks Sr., 90, of Woodbridge, Va., and formerly of Kankakee, died peacefully Monday (Dec. 26, 2011) at his home, following a very brief illness. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at Lax Mortuary, Kankakee. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Caldwell Chapel AME Zion Church, 805 N. Evergreen Ave., in Kankakee. Pastor Lori Holmes will officiate, and Elder Jesse Franks Jr. will deliver the eulogy.
Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens of Memory, Kankakee.
Mr. Franks was born Dec. 25, 1921, in Parkins, Ark., the son of Andy and Dora Franks. He was married to the former Louise Cochran, who preceded him in death.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He previously served as a 1st Ward alderman and County Board member; and was a Freemason, former boxer and coach. He retired from the General Foods Corp.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jesse Jr. and leWaun Franks, of San Diego, Calif., and Earl and Ella Franks, of Woodbridge, Va.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Shelia and Joseph Gulledge, of Montclair, Va., Mildred and Mark Spriggs, of Spotsylvania, Va., and Lila Tate, of Minneapolis, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Vanilla Hudson, of Kankakee; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
