John Carlton Berger - Wilmington
John C. Berger, 70, of Wilmington, formerly of the southside of Chicago, passed away Sunday (Nov. 20, 2011) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, at the Freitag-Reeves & Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road in Wilmington. Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in John's memory to the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Honor Squad or to Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.
Mr. Berger retired from ExxonMobil Joliet Refinery in 1998 after 27 years of service. He was born Oct. 10, 1941, in Chicago, the son of Carl and Martha "Becky" Randolph-Berger. He was raised and educated in Chicago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Mobil Retirement Club and had a love for traveling and nature. He was a volunteer at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, as well as, Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. John will be remembered as a faithful and loving husband and father, who was forever dedicated to his wife and children.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, the former Katherine "Shirley" Milholland, whom he married Oct. 15, 1966, at St. Felicitas Catholic Church, in Chicago; daughter, Amy Berger, of Port Orange, Fla.; two sons, Christopher Berger and Matthew Berger, both of Wilmington; brother and sister-in-law, William and Barbara Berger, of Tempe, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
